The Heart Nebula, IC 1805, Sharpless 2-190, which lies some 7500 light years away from Earth in the Perseus Arm of our Galaxy in the constellation Cassiopeia. At magnitude around 14, it is not readily visible in amateur telescopes. This image was taken over several nights with an AP-155 refractor at f/5.2 through an IDAS LPS V4 filter. It is a composite some 10 x 3-5 minute exposures shot with a modified Canon 6D at ISO 3200-6400 under very dark skies.

The "Elephant Trunk" nebula

Although it was cold (28 F!) and seeing was just fair, transparency was excellent last night. I finally captured enough frames of one of my favorite deep sky objects, the "Elephant Trunk" nebula in IC 1396 in Cepheus, with my new Plane Wave 12.5-inch. Shooting with the modified Canon 6D, and IDAS LPS V4 filter at ISO 3200-6400, this composite consist of about 10 x 5 minute frames. This faint object is not visible by eye even through a large telescope, but records well photographically.

This is a deeper bicolor look at the delicate Veil nebula. Narrowband filters were used and it was shot during and around the full moon, the filters do an amazing job of blocking out unwanted light.

Thanks to the unusually long stretch of fine weather and fair seeing, I have had fun imaging from my observatory the past couple of months. The appended images are as follows;

1. M45 the Pleiades, is a multi stack totaling about 40 minutes of exposure with the AP-155 Starfire Apo refractor at f/5.2, all taken with a modified Canon 6D and IDAS LPS-V4 filter, shooting at ISO 1600-6400.

2. IC-5146, the Cocoon Nebula was shot through my still new 12.5 - inch Plane Wave CDK at f/8. This is a stack of 8 x 5-7 minute exposure, also a modified Canon 6D and IDAS LPS-V4 filter, shooting at ISO 6400. This object is a frequently underappreciated, complex emission and reflection nebula about 3,000 LY away in Cygnus, with much detail and color.

This is a stack of 8 images using my tired old Canon 450D set to 100 ISO and a full range of shutter durations to capture the prominence as well as the corona.

High Dynamic Range Stacking and processing. I hope to get more of the lunar surface detail and I explore blending multiple stacks.
